[Techtrouble] Help on Sunday 5/23

(Resending yesterday's message)

Hi Techies,

Nice to see many of you at the science fair tonight. Petra reminded
me that it's been a pretty quiet spring for the tech committee, but
there is something coming up where tech help would be useful. We're
relocating the music keyboard lab from room 1 to room 5 on Sunday, May
23, 1:00-4:00. It will involve running a lot of Ethernet cables to
connect the keyboards to a central hub. Please let me know if you're
available.

Best,
--Mark

Ordered DC-in board for 12" iBook

One of the iBooks is being very picky about how it gets plugged in to power, so I ordered a new DC-in board (ebay, $20 incl. shipping). I'll install it once it arrives. (It's coming from Philadelphia.)

AFP File Sharing from thing2

Hi,

What works: Thing2 has a current copy of all student directories. Thing2 uses northshoreview as its authentication source (using ldap). Thing2 is sharing user home directories using afp. (You can mount them using cmd-K in the Finder.)

What doesn't work: Automounting of those home directories for users. I could use some help from a Mac expert, although I do have a couple of other things to try. It might suffice just to have someone familiar with Workgroup Manager that I can explain this to.

I'll come by again tomorrow, or if someone wants to make an appointment to work on this, that would be fine too. (Friday morning?)

Regards,
Dennis
P.S. I did set up Mobile Directories" for just one user, Carter Gentry. We'll see if that also reduces the load on northshoreview. If it works the way I think it does, that would give the lowest load on the xserve, and the fastest performance for users.

ASL crashes

Hi,

I was poking through the system logs on northshoreview (the xserve) as part of my quest to serve half the student home directories from thing2, and found several programs that crash repeatedly. The most frequent one was aslmanager, so I looked up what to do about it, and this apple discussion seemed the most helpful, so I took the recommended action (delete the asl.db) and I haven't seen any aslmanager crashes since (logs in /Library/Logs/CrashReporter).

I anyone notices more crashes, feel free to let me know.

Thanks,
Dennis

ATTENTION: Mills College has found the word "password" within this message.
We remind you that Mills College will never solicit your account password
via email. Email is inherently insecure, and such solicitations are likely
scams. If you receive a message that you suspect may be fraudulent, please
contact its-support@mills.edu immediately.
****************************************************************************

The problem is not about accessing WGM, the problem is logging into the server with Remote Desktop. The server says "Access Denied" when we try to start a session on it with Remote Desktop. It seems likely that either the password is incorrect or the Remote Desktop process on the server isn't responding.

Once we get onto the server with Remote Desktop we should be able to use WGM there. Right, we want to use WGM on the server, not on Melissa's computer, because Melisssa's computer has 10.4.

Also right, Radmind caused the computers to rename themselves the first time, but we should be able to rename them back in WGM. Radmind isn't set up to automatically update the computers yet.
Thanks!

Hi Melissa,

I got the request that you put in about accessing Workgroup Manager. The
password for WGM has not changed. If you are having problems working
with it, it is because you are running 10.4 and the server is at 10.5.
The computers renaming themselves is not being caused by the server. WGM
reflects the name that the computer has. It is most likely the Radmind
program that is causing this.

Re: [Techtrouble] [Tech] still renaming

Hmm, very curious. Can you make a list of which eMacs rename themselves to Ci?

Instead of bookmarks, you can have us add links to the NSM computer lab web page. We can do it pretty quickly or we can give you permission to do it. It's generally better to have the links on the web page instead of as bookmarks since (1) you only have to change it in one place, not on a bunch of computers and (2) students can get to the links from their classroom or home, not just from the lab. ...And I guess (3) it won't disappear unexpectedly.

Best,

Re: [Techtrouble] [Tech] computers renaming and remote desktop

Also, just to update on what I did Friday afternoon, I got stuck on finding the canonical source of student accounts in order to change where the home directories point (will be to nsv-site-th2:/Users/<xxxx>).  Melissa and I did choose a class to switch for a trial, at least, and I have that list.

Thing2 does seem to be serving files just fine, at least.

I worked on Ck on Friday afternoon so it might think it's Ci now, but that should be the only one affected.  (Ck was the one that wouldn't let students save any files.  Better now?)
No clue about Wi, sorry.  Is that one of the minis or just an eMac?

Hello,
This morning I came in to find that many of the computers had renamed
themselves as Ci (and then a number after). I went through each computer
in the lab, checked the remote access, renamed as they were supposed to be
and the access privileges as well. I am also having trouble logging into
Wi at all. I can't login as nsvadmin, admin or student. Won't take any
passwords, so I have shut down for now.
Would anyone have any insight to the renaming issue or is the poltergeist
just back?

Thanks,
Melissa
