Dear Esmond, Jan, and all, [resending]

To get our new techies oriented, here is a brief description of what is installed at NSM, as far as I know.  Feel free to comment or add additional details (or questions), one and all.  Jan, it would be great if you want to turn this into a diagram or other useful format.

A couple of years ago I wrote up a guide for the teachers about what equipment is on campus for classroom use; see the link on the Tech Committee web page here: http://www.nsmontessori.org/drupal/node/32
It has a map of the campus showing which rooms have Airports (WiFi base stations) and various types of printers.

> A diagram showing the machines (hardware and software revs)

Melissa has a spreadsheet listing the computers on campus by serial number.  About 110 of them (eMacs and iBooks) were purchased under the 2005-07 magnet grant.  Software upgrades range from none (in some classrooms) to current (the 30 eMacs in the lab now have radmind for this purpose, and the Xserve was set up to provide software updates).   We have purchased just a few newer iMacs and Macbooks with PTA money and received some donated Dell PCs used in the kindergarten and the office.

> network connectivity (10/100/1G), etc.

Unfortunately a wiring diagram for the campus does not seem to exist, or if it does the district staff didn't have it when we asked a couple of years ago.  From what we do know, the campus was wired with fiber optics (!) sometime during the late Clinton administration.  There are concentrators in each wing of the school that are linked to a central hub in the book room (on the opposite side of the library from the computer lab) and from there to the server closet (behind the office).  From there, we're networked to the district office and out to the Internet (through the district's firewall).  The district put in a major upgrade to their network backbone last year (concurrent with switching their phone system to VoIP) which should have sped up our connection to the outside world, but I'm not sure that we have seen that benefit.

There are generally 5 or 6 data ports in each classroom--usually four grouped together (for student computers) and an extra that is often across the room (for a teacher's computer).  This almost invariably leaves us one or two ports short of what is needed for a networked printer or WiFi base station.  When the magnet grant of 2005-07 purchased all new classroom computers and printers, the teachers got wireless laptops, and one of the desktop computers (eMacs) in most rooms was set up wirelessly, freeing up some ports.  But we often have trouble keeping those wireless eMacs connected, and lately the district tech staff has just been adding a small switch to those rooms so that there are enough ports for all of the hardware.

> How many machines are within the school network (thing1, thing2, XSERVE)?  Which machine is doing what task (authentication, file server, print server, DNS server)?

The magnet grant was also used to purchase the current Xserve to host student and teacher accounts.  As far as I know it is just used for authentication and as a file server for user files--all of the software we use is installed locally on the desktop computers, so no user applications are running there.  Wait--there's one exception: Typing Master runs as a web-based application on the server, but I'm not sure if Melissa is using that program with the students anymore.  Also it's serving software updates for the lab computers.

Does anyone have the specs for the Xserve?  From what I recall, it was a mid-to-low range model when purchased in early 2005.  Several other schools on the same magnet grant got the same model, but I suspect that we are using ours more than the other schools.

The Xserve shares the server closet with a Dell server that runs the school attendance software, AERIES.  That one is off limits to us civilians--teachers have to access AERIES daily to report attendance and we sometimes get calls for help when it goes down, but those requests have to be referred to the district staff.

Thing1 and Thing2 are two donated Linux servers that we have at our disposal.  Dennis, any details on these?

The printers are configured with Bonjour so there is no central print server, although that system has some problems too ("ghost" printers that we uninstalled years ago continue to pop up in the list of available printers).

> Any chance we can migrate towards cheaper commodity hardware, e.g. Linux boxes

A concern here will be the district staff's ability/willingness to let these onto the district network.  They are (reasonably) concerned about consistency with the other 14 schools in the district.

Hope this helps in thinking about what we have and what we want.  Best,
--Mark

Great questions!  We will not proceed until we figure this out as a group.  Besides Melissa, Mark has the most intimate knowledge of the set-up and maybe even a map, and Aaron and Dennis know the server.  I don't know what information the district has.
I think we should meet to brainstorm.  I was hoping that we could move forward before break.  Anyone who is around tomorrow morning, come by the lab and let's see if we can figure out a time to get together.  I imagine we won't be hearing form the district anytime soon, but maybe we can get Jason from the district on the phone if we need him.  If we can't figure anything out before break, we will meet the first week after, but let's see if we can at least keep the communication open until then.

Hi Petra,

For those of us without an intimate knowledge of the school setup, is there an architecture diagram somewhere that can be referred to?  A diagram showing the machines (hardware and software revs), network connectivity (10/100/1G), etc.

How many machines are within the school network (thing1, thing2, XSERVE)?  Which machine is doing what task (authentication, file server, print server, DNS server)?  Any chance we can migrate towards cheaper commodity hardware, e.g. Linux boxes?  Any possibilities for current hardware to be upgraded rather than purchasing a new server?  What about other possibilities like updating all drivers, setting timeouts on logged in accounts, etc.

I think many of us in the Tech Club would love to help, but without a clear understanding of the system, are unable to provide advice/assistance.

Since the problem is AFP, switching their home directories  to NFS (what Dennis said about thing1 and thing2) would likely help a lot.  It's just the task of actually doing it.  This should take the majority of the load off the server and possibly spare us another year or two.

The other ("free") option is to proceed with putting the student accounts on those linux boxes, thing1 and thing2.  That will help if the network between the machine room and the lab is robust, which I'm not sure it is.  (Actually, a new XServe won't help if the network between the machine room and the lab isn't robust.)

If DNS on the XServe is turned off, are all the clients (i.e., student machines) timing out on the first DNS entry and then using the district DNS?  That would cause slowness on the student machines.  If so, we should re-point their DNS to whatever we decide is canonical.

I guess I should come by the lab and check it out.  I would be happy to move a test subset of the student accounts to thing1/thing2 for testing -- thing1 and thing2 are all ready to serve AFS.

About upgrading to the latest version of Leopard:  Isn't that what Jason did over the summer?  Was there another update since then?  (I admit I am not current on Leopard releases since I don't run it myself anymore.)

I had a chat with Phyllis, and I can probably come up with about $5k, assuming that we don't need to do this more than everytime Mark has a 4th grader (every 5 years or so).

Hi Jason,Pat and Rick,
In reference to our email discussion about the XSERVE and the speed, we
asked a consultant from Apple to come in and give his opinion on it.

We had someone come in to see if he could find anything wrong with the
server so we might figure out why some things are so slow.  He looked
through the logs a few things that might help:

1. named is crashing every 10 seconds. He turned off DNS in Server Admin
for now since it still works from the clients.
2. kadmind is complaining about a missing configuration file.
3. He also suggested upgrading to the latest version of Leopard.

The other thing he noticed was that the load was around 2-3 and as soon as
the students logged in AFP went up to 100%, the load went to 18.
Obviously, we can create local accounts on each machine, but this isn't a
very good solution. We did this though to get through the week. Login is
student, password student.

We have decided that it is time for us to purchase a new XSERVE. We would
like to know if any of you are available this week to have an open
discussion about what we should purchase. This would be in terms of cost,
and life span. If you can't and would like to do this via conference call
or email, that's fine too. We would like to purchase it before the end of
the year and get it installed as early as possible in January. Would this
be possible with your workload?

Please let me know your thoughts, we want your involvement and to work
within your schedule as well as ours.

Thanks for your help,
Melissa

Hi Melissa & all,

Problem fixed--please let the district know.

I thought it might be a WiFi problem since this 9A is a wireless eMac
but that was working okay.

I checked under Utilities / Directory Access and found no entries for
LDAP, so added northshoreview. (Note: all lower case; do not bind to
the directory.) Somehow the setting must have been deleted. Once
restored the login screen shows "Network accounts available" and Mara
was able to log in.

Re: [Techtrouble] [Tech] NSM server

Thanks Melissa.

To clarify one point: Microsoft Office *is* installed locally on each
Mac; the software itself is not being run off of the server. However,
the students' home directories are on the server, and MS Word checks
for files there when it starts up.

[Techtrouble] server connection

FYI...

I had to issue a ticket due to no student connections to the server. This
is the second time this week we've had the problem. Jason responded he
will let me know when they are working.
We also can not print to the room 1 color laser in the lab. Jason wants to
reconfigure the printers over winter break. I will provide him with a list
of the rooms and the printers in each room.

****************************************************************************

Hi techies,

Hope you're all having a good summer so far. FYI, I've installed and run Radmind on 10 computers in the lab. Ch is running the Radmind server process and the other 9 (Ci plus all of the eMacs along the wall) have the client software. I used the client software to reimage all of those 9 computers in under an hour--much faster than our previous method! They now have purple login screens. The only catch is that they all think they're named Ci--we'll see if they figure out their real names again once the Northshoreview server comes back online (I see that it's been turned off since the end of the school year).

For reference here is the process for installing and running Radmind on a client for the first time. Once installed, we can configure automatic updates going forward. The next step, though, is installing Radmind on the remaining lab and classroom computers.

Best,
--Mark

Twelve steps for installing the Radmind client

1. Log in as the local administrator (admin on blue/grey screens, nsvadmin on the purple screens).
-- Cancel any automatic updates.

2. Open the local Utilities folder (Go / Utilities)

3. Open the Utilities folder on a computer that has the Radmind software
-- Go / Connect to Server
Server address: NS-Lab-Ch.local
Log in with the administrator password for *that* computer (always nsvadmin)
-- Mount Macintosh HD
-- Open Applications / Utilities

4. Copy the Radmind folder from the remote computer's Utilities folder to the local computer's Utilities folder

5. On the local computer, run Utilities / Radmind / Radmind Assistant

6. Install Radmind Tools
-- OK
-- Continue (3 times)
-- Agree
-- Click on Macintosh HD, then Continue
-- Install
Enter the local administrator password
-- Close

7. First-time run window
-- Click "I'm an old hand and want to update this client"
-- Continue (2 times)
-- Host: NS-Lab-Ch.local
Enter the local administrator password (2 times)

8. Check filesystem for changes to make
-- Click on Disable Checksums, then Continue
Runs for about 3 minutes

9. Apply Necessary Changes
-- Click on Disable Checksums, then Continue
-- Process (2 times)
Enter the local administrator password
Runs for about 7 minutes
-- Finish

10. Reboot now? Click Don't Reboot to finish the program (trying to reboot here fails)

11. Restart the computer (from the Apple menu)

12. Verify that you can log in (will now be purple screen, nsvadmin administrator account)

Notes on the Radmind server installation
--The Radmind server program is running on NS-Lab-Ch (an eMac, not the Xserve) so that computer must be on for the clients to run their updates.
--The Radmind positive transcript (collection of files to be installed/restored on all clients) was created from NS-Lab-Ci.
--If/when new transcripts need to be created, use Radmind Assistant to upload a new transcript to the Radmind server, then use the Radmind Server Manager tools on NS-Lab-Ch to update the command file that all clients will access.

Hi Melissa,

Glad to hear that Jason will be doing the server OS upgrade. Please pass
along these comments along with any others'.

To my knowledge there is no existing backup image of the server--other
techies please chime in if you know of one.

I also am not aware of any non-obvious configurations that we would want
to keep on the server (but again, others please chime in). Well, on
second thought, maybe there is one: the server is running a service that
allows students to log in to their Typing Master accounts (separate from
their MacOS accounts); we'll need to make sure that remains operational
after the upgrade.

As a reminder, two issues that we'd like to lose with this upgrade, if
possible, are (1) the Kerberos double-login problem and (2) the problem of
"ghost printers" reappearing in users' printer lists long after the actual
printers have been decommissioned.

Thanks,

Memory for Server

Hi,

The additional memory for the northshoreview xserve is supposed to arrive "early next week." It's 4 GB (2 x 2 GB DIMMS). I can either install it myself or leave it for someone from the district, just let me know. It only

As I understand it, we need 5 GB minimum to install 10.5 Server, and we currently have 3 GB, so the total of 7 GB should suffice. If, when we run it under load (probably next fall), we notice paging or swapping, it should be quicker and cheaper to get more memory then. (We'll still have room for 4GB more, and could even swap out the two 512 MB DIMMS to get room for another 4GB at the cost of that 1GB.)

[Techtrouble] update on OS install

Just got some great news,
Rick Edson confirmed they would be happy to do the upgrade Os install and
the client machines for us during the summer. Thank you, thank you!
We would like to know if Pat or Rick you would like to meet sometime next
week for any info you may need from our group? Please advise.
I will be giving the software to Phyllis since she will be here for a
couple of weeks past the last day of school. Also you can feel free to
contact me if you need anything as well.
Thanks again,
Melissa and tech group.

[Techtrouble] Lab computer Ce (progress report)

On 5/21 Melissa reported that Ce was shutting down on its own several times in one day.
I reimaged the computer today.  That should rule out a software/configuration problem.
If it happens again, we'll need to look at the hardware.

Firefox and XML

I will be doing this for all the laptops beginning 6/1

Re: [Techtrouble] Firefox and Microsoft XML converter

What have the macs been using before this? Firefox is not necessary.
Safari works just fine.

We can send you the link to the converter, but it really is not
something that we would install on all laptops. If they cannot open
the communications, then they should email back to the sender and ask
them to save it in the 97-2003 format so that it can be read.

Hi Pat and Jason,

The teachers need to have Firefox and Microsoft XML converter installed
on
their laptops as they are unable to open communications from the Do in
the
updated format. Firefox is needed for Data Director report cards. I have
issued a ticket (1243439782) but I would like to make sure all their
laptops are in the lab onsite when you come to do this. Since report
cards
will be due very soon, will this be possible? Please advise

[Techtrouble] Swapped printers in 10 & 17

As requested, these printers have been moved and renamed:
--Office Color Laser is now Room 17 Color Laser 2605dn
--Room 17 Laser is now Room 10 Laser
--the old Room 10 Laser has been moved to the lab to use for parts.

For reference, here's the procedure. Before moving a printer, log on
to its web page to change its name and IP address. Printer IP
addresses should be 10.25.70.xx for color printers and 10.25.80.xx for
black & white printers; xx represents the room number.

The available printer options for computers are set in Workgroup
Manager / Computer Lists (classrooms) / Preferences. Each computer
should be set to use the printer in the same room by default, and
should also have the computer lab printers and another nearby printer
as options.

We still have the problem of "ghost" printers reappearing in the list
of available printers after they have been deleted (some have been
gone for years but pop up again on the list). Any clues?

Best,
--Mark

[Techtrouble] printer repairs

Rooms 2 and 6 have dead printers(lights on nobody home). Room 10 has had 3
drum replacements. We should use the brain from to 10 to replace either 2
or 6(don't forget to change the name please and we'll do in workgroup too.
Then Room 17 and 18 want the old office color printer. We can take either
of those Dell 1710's for one of the other rooms. That still leaves us one
short, I think we still have one old one in the closet that we can use for
parts. Dr. Rich Leong-are you up for this?
Let's talk at the meeting.

Teacher laptops in general

Dennis's post on fixing Sue McKenna's laptop reminds me that there are another 14 or 15 laptops at NSM of the same vintage, with 256 mb of memory, a potentially defective chip, and no warranty.

Do you suppose we can convince the district to replace these rather than purchasing a new Windows PC desktop for every classroom? (That's part of the district's plan for Measure L money.)

Repaired Susan McKenna iBook motherboard

Hi,

I repaired the motherboard on Susan McKenna's iBook, and reliably booted it several times and ran it for several hours. These motherboards have a defect where the graphics power supply chip develops a cracked solder joint, and Apple hasn't figured out a good fix, so I doubt my fix will last forever (I just re-soldered it using a microscope and fine-tipped soldering iron), but if it happens again, I can solder it again. (And next time I'll probably have a hot-air SMD solder rework station instead of just a soldering iron.) Ways to minimize this problem are to 1) always use two hands to pick up the laptop, and to 2) just leave it on all day instead of turning it on and off every time you use it, since power cycling tends to stress this defective joint.

I think it could still use a re-imaging. I started to run Software Update but it was taking a REALLY long time. It only has 256 MB of memory, so I ordered a 1GB SODIMM, which ran $44 including shipping. I can either bring it by tomorrow or wait until the memory arrives and bring it back then.

Regards,
Dennis
P.S. I was out sick last Friday, and the prior Friday just headed to work when the power outage seemed like it was going to last a while.

[Techtrouble] 11A and B fixed

both of these computers are fixed and happy in their room now. Thank you

The Server has 3GB of memory; Running DNS on the server

Installed two 1 GB DIMMS and booted back up; seems to work fine.

Also noted that our server CAN accept 2GB DIMMS, so we should order at least a pair of those.  So we'll have 512 MB x 2, 1 GB x 2, then 2 GB x 2, for 7 GB total.

Also managed to use Remote Desktop to set all lab machines to use ONLY northshoreview for DNS.  (Various machines had been using combinations of 10.3.30.110, 10.17.30.110, and northshoreview (10.25.40.12)).  Now if the Northshoreview DNS stops working, so will the lab machines, but at least we will know what's going on instead of just getting mysterious lag.  Remote Desktop is pretty cool.  Now if only these machines had LOM (Lights Out Management) instead of needing a kid to run around the room pressing spacebars and/or power buttons.

Friday, March 27, 2009

Remote Desktop has access to all lab machines

OK, now both instances of Remote Desktop have access to all the lab machines.  ns-lab-imac-02 and ns-lab-imac-01 were holdouts.  I don't know why they didn't show up with a name, but I created a custom Remote Desktop Installer, put that on the diradmin directory on northshoreview, mounted it from each of the two, and ran it.  After that install, both machines now show up on both Melissa's admin console and the secondary one.

I think Remote Desktop will now work for all machines, from either admin console.

Remote Desktop from Lab-Admin(2) has access to all lab machines

On the four remaining holdouts (Ch, Ck, Wd, and BWd) from Remote Desktop, I went to each machine, logged in as admin or nsvadmin, chose Sharing, Apple Remote Desktop, then Access Permissions.  I enabled at least some account (usually nsvadmin) for ARD and enabled all the ARD things (report, control, observe, etc.)  I then entered the matching login/password info in Remote Desktop on Lab-Admin(2).  That, plus a reboot, got all machines controllable from Lab-Admin(2).

I also updated the ARD client software on those machines, plus a few more throughout the network that happened to be available.

Last round of Software Updates for a while?

As far as I can tell, all the lab machines are up to date.  That took a while.

Now that the server has current and correct packages on it, I re-ran software update on all the machines until there were no new packages to install.  The main thing that seems to have been out of date was Java, although we got a couple more Safari updates (to Safari 3.2.1).

Gathered some data on server disk utilization

Melissa had a classroom full (ok, 24) of kids all launch Safari at once (as she would typically do when teaching the kids a new procedure).  I gathered iostats until all the kids were successfully at their destination web page.  I noticed that the number of transactions per second on disk1 and disk2 spikes in the 160+ range, then gradually dwindles down to the 50-ish range after a few minutes.  When it's in the 150+ range, kids definitely seem to be getting the beach ball of doom.  Also, for reference, the steady-state number of tps when the lab is idle (except for me) is in the 0 - 20 range.

This makes me think of two ways we might improve things.
1.  Move some or all of the kids' home directories to another (or multiple) file servers.
2.  Add RAM to the server so that some of the disk activity might be cached in RAM.

I still don't know how congested the local network is because I don't know how to log on to the managed(?) network switches (or how to use them, for that matter).  The outbound connection seemed OK during this experiment because we had zero packet loss while pinging yahoo.com for the duration.  I guess that also argues that the local network isn't too congested.

The other thing I noticed was that when counting net connections using netstat, it pauses frequently when it's about to display an ipv6 connection.  For example:

northshoreview:~ admin$ netstat
. . .
tcp6 0 0 fe80:4::20d:93ff.548 fe80:4::214:51ff.49229 ESTABLISHED

It doesn't pause with netstat -n, so I think we have a reverse DNS lookup problem.  I don't know much about our particular DNS setup, but I'll try to learn about it and see if I can figure out what's working and what isn't.  Poorly performing DNS setups can cause a lot of end-user slowness.

Here's the (sorry, really ugly) iostat output.

northshoreview:~ diradmin$ iostat 5
disk1 disk0 disk2 cpu

Managing Software Update Server

I should also mention that using Workgroup Manager, I set the "Software Update Server To Use" preference to be managed Always, and to use "http://northshoreview.smfc.k12.ca.us:8088" on all of the groups Lab Computers, and Room 2 through Room 19.

Software Update packages were missing

It looks like we were trying to use our server to mirror software update packages so we didn't have to re-fetch them for each computer.

A problem I ran into when trying to do the software updates was that at least two of the packages, GarageBand 1.1 and J2SE 5 something wouldn't install.

I poked around on the server and found where the software update packages are mirrored (/usr/share/swupd/html, as it turns out), and deleted the two offending packages (which were of size 0).  Then, using Server Admin, told Software Update to check in with Apple, which resulted in a fresh fetch of those two packages.  Yay!  When I ran Software Update on one of the lab macs, now it was able to install the packages.  Yay!  Then, that mac was eligible for the next Java update, which was also size 0 and failed.  Boo!

So I did a find in the software update directory for all zero length packages and turned up 20 or more out of 206 that were apparently messed up.   I deleted all those and am currently refetching from Apple (just poked the "Check Now" button on Server Admin -> northshoreview -> Software Update), and it looks like we'll have a fresh set of updates shortly.  Most of those won't apply to most of the lab macs, at least (e.g., updates to FinalCutPro, DVDStudioPro, WebObjects Developer, etc.), but we still need to run software update on all of them to at least get Java current.  I'll dig on on that again Friday, probably.

Software Update, both Apple and Microsoft

The following applies to machines Ch - Cn, plus the back wall machines, BWa - BWd and imac03 (which is the last back wall machine).

Ran Software Update (multiple times with reboots, it turns out) to get the remaining macs up to date.  A few were still running Safari 3.0.4, in particular, which could have caused some stability issues.  Now they are all up to Safari 3.2.1.

Also ran Microsoft Autoupdate repeatedly to get through the Microsoft Office for Mac 11.5.3 update.

I found it helpful to leave machines with software update showing "no updates available" and with Word launched, showing the (latest) version.

The only problem I know of with those machines is that three of the machines, Cl, Cm and Cn, seem to have a bogus software update server or at least bogus software update packages for Garageband and J2SE (Java).  I checked one of them and Safari is at least up to date, so they should be fine for most purposes.

Remaining work is to get the other machines (Ca - Cg and the left wall machines Wd, We, etc.) up to date on Microsoft software, and to verify that they are all set to auto-download updates, both microsoft and apple.

Software Updated 3 more lab macs

Software updated -Ch, Cj and Ck.  Missed Ci.

pbs.org seemed to be intermittently down, both from the lab and from Dennis' home system.  Traceroute showed that it was down after reaching pbs's gateway.

Software Updated another 15 lab macs

Ran software update on the LAB-Wx macs and -Ca through -Cg.  Set them all to download updates in the background.

That leaves the back wall machines and -Ch through -Cn

Didn't run Microsoft Autoupdate yet.

Remote Desktop

Verified that both NS-LAB-ADMIN(2) and "System Admin Console" are running the latest Remote Desktop software version, 3.2.2.

From the main admin console, pushed out remote desktop client software version 3.2.2 to 19 of 74 computers.  (The rest all had some issue or other -- being offline, access denied, or not supported.)

The states are:

Current Remote Desktop Client, 33 Computers (mostly lab)
Access Denied, 2 computers
Not Supported, 4
Offline, 35 (mostly classroom computers)

Updated Four Lab Macs

Ran Software Update and rebooted NS-LAB-IMAC-01, -02, NS-LAB-MusicMac 02 and NS-LAB-ADMIN(2).

Also repeatedly ran Microsoft AutoUpdate on all of them to get from Office 11.5.0 to 11.5.5.  (Five runs each!)
