[Techtrouble] Lab computer Ce (progress report)
Re: [Techtrouble] Firefox and Microsoft XML converter
Safari works just fine.
We can send you the link to the converter, but it really is not
something that we would install on all laptops. If they cannot open
the communications, then they should email back to the sender and ask
them to save it in the 97-2003 format so that it can be read.

Subject: Firefox and Microsoft XML converter
Hi Pat and Jason,
The teachers need to have Firefox and Microsoft XML converter installed
on
their laptops as they are unable to open communications from the Do in
the
updated format. Firefox is needed for Data Director report cards. I have
issued a ticket (1243439782) but I would like to make sure all their
laptops are in the lab onsite when you come to do this. Since report
cards
will be due very soon, will this be possible? Please advise
Thank you,
Melissa

[Techtrouble] Swapped printers in 10 & 17
--Office Color Laser is now Room 17 Color Laser 2605dn
--Room 17 Laser is now Room 10 Laser
--the old Room 10 Laser has been moved to the lab to use for parts.
For reference, here's the procedure. Before moving a printer, log on
to its web page to change its name and IP address. Printer IP
addresses should be 10.25.70.xx for color printers and 10.25.80.xx for
black & white printers; xx represents the room number.
The available printer options for computers are set in Workgroup
Manager / Computer Lists (classrooms) / Preferences. Each computer
should be set to use the printer in the same room by default, and
should also have the computer lab printers and another nearby printer
as options.
We still have the problem of "ghost" printers reappearing in the list
of available printers after they have been deleted (some have been
gone for years but pop up again on the list). Any clues?
Best,
--Mark

[Techtrouble] printer repairs
drum replacements. We should use the brain from to 10 to replace either 2
or 6(don't forget to change the name please and we'll do in workgroup too.
Then Room 17 and 18 want the old office color printer. We can take either
of those Dell 1710's for one of the other rooms. That still leaves us one
short, I think we still have one old one in the closet that we can use for
parts. Dr. Rich Leong-are you up for this?
Let's talk at the meeting.

Teacher laptops in general
Do you suppose we can convince the district to replace these rather than purchasing a new Windows PC desktop for every classroom? (That's part of the district's plan for Measure L money.)
Repaired Susan McKenna iBook motherboard
I repaired the motherboard on Susan McKenna's iBook, and reliably booted it several times and ran it for several hours. These motherboards have a defect where the graphics power supply chip develops a cracked solder joint, and Apple hasn't figured out a good fix, so I doubt my fix will last forever (I just re-soldered it using a microscope and fine-tipped soldering iron), but if it happens again, I can solder it again. (And next time I'll probably have a hot-air SMD solder rework station instead of just a soldering iron.) Ways to minimize this problem are to 1) always use two hands to pick up the laptop, and to 2) just leave it on all day instead of turning it on and off every time you use it, since power cycling tends to stress this defective joint.
I think it could still use a re-imaging. I started to run Software Update but it was taking a REALLY long time. It only has 256 MB of memory, so I ordered a 1GB SODIMM, which ran $44 including shipping. I can either bring it by tomorrow or wait until the memory arrives and bring it back then.
Regards,
Dennis
P.S. I was out sick last Friday, and the prior Friday just headed to work when the power outage seemed like it was going to last a while.
